Oven repair for baking that behaves

An oven that heats unevenly, runs hot, or won't come up to temperature will quietly ruin everything you cook in it. Most of these faults come down to a failed bake or broil element, a temperature sensor that has drifted, or a control board that is no longer reading the sensor correctly.

An oven that won't heat at all is often the simplest repair of the group — frequently a burned-out element or a tripped thermal cutout.

What we check

We test the bake and broil elements for continuity, verify the oven temperature sensor against its expected resistance, check the door latch and gasket for heat loss, and confirm the control board is sending the correct signals. On models with a convection fan we check the fan motor and its airflow path as well.

For microwaves we look at the door interlock switches, the control board and the internal fusing. Microwaves store high voltage even when unplugged, so this is work that should be left to a trained technician rather than attempted at home.

Uneven baking

If your cakes dome on one side or cookies burn on the bottom rack, have the oven's actual temperature measured. A sensor that reads ten or twenty degrees off is a common and inexpensive fix.
